These are unprecedented times. The rapid changes in our world are upending our norms and making us rethink how we function under new constraints. My hope is that we will come out of this pandemic with new abilities, new solutions and new ideas that make us better.
Five years ago I was part of a massive layoff at Target. While this is no comparison to a global pandemic, I learned some valuable lessons that apply to our situation today. It felt surreal and unbelievable. When I was let go that day, so was half my team, my leadership and over 3,000 others. Everyone kept saying they couldn’t believe it was happening. It didn’t feel real. Sound familiar?
My husband had recently left his job to go back to school and our daughter was 11 months old. The future was unnerving. Turns out, this hurdle sparked the most amazing journey into self-discovery, entrepreneurship and joy. Today, my husband is an ER nurse, our daughter is a happy almost-6-year old, our son is nearly 2, and Pivot Strategies is a thriving business.
Looking back, the suspense was much worse than the actual event and aftermath. Before I knew it I was on the other side and in a better place. So let this be a reminder for anyone fearful of the future – you will be okay. The suspense is the worst part. Look for others that lift you up. Be a helper. Be patient and calm. Have faith. Find new opportunities.
You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think.
